PSYCHIATRIC-MENTAL HEALTH RN

Under general supervision, to provide professional nursing care to emotionally disturbed and/or mentally ill patients; to work with clinical and case management staff to coordinate care and assist in treatment plans for clients; and to perform related work.

Psychiatric-Mental Health RN Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Provide care to psychiatric patients
  • Provide psychological support to patients and their families
  • Transcribe doctor’s orders, review charts
  • Administer medications or treatments as directed
  • Monitor patient progress and document changes to behavior or health

In this role, you provide care and support to the patients and their families. Common tasks include transcribing doctor’s orders, reviewing charts, and administering medications or treatments. You also document any noticeable changes to patient behavior or health. Applicants should have a valid RN license and some specialized education or experience working with mental health patients.

Knowledge of:

  • Professional nursing principles, procedures, and techniques used in the care and treatment of psychiatric patients
  • Social, psychological, and physical factors of mental and emotional disorders
  • Medical and psychological terminology
  • Medications, including psychotropic drugs, and effects on psychiatric patients
  • Control, preparation and administration of medications
  • Theories, principles, and techniques of group and individual psychotherapy
  • Symptoms and behavior patterns of emotionally disturbed mentally ill patients
  • Medical and psychiatric emergency procedures

Qualifications:

  • State RN License
  • Minimum of one-year clinical experience in chosen clinical specialty
  • Supervisory references or at a minimum verification of previous work experience
  • Current CPR certification (American Heart Association) BLS, or ACLS
